Dear WCUUSD School Board,I am asking you to vote NO on the configuration committee’s proposal to close Calais Elementary School. Here are my reasons:• Calais already provides a strong, high-quality education. Families who want a larger school experience could be accommodated by allowing intra-district elementary transfers.• East Montpelier does not have enough space to absorb Calais students, as stated by the Superintendent and noted in the 11/19 board meeting minutes.• Closing Calais will not meaningfully reduce property taxes. The main drivers of education costs—salaries and health insurance—are statewide issues, not building-specific ones.• I understand the district has a budget gap, but I have heard that Calais is not over budget for 2026–2027. The public deserves to see which schools are contributing to the overage before any decisions are made.• The Act 73 Committee recommended that further district consolidation be voluntary and did not propose any new maps. It makes sense to resolve the broader district consolidation question before closing any school buildings.Thank you for your time and service.
